SmartGradeâ„¢ Motor Graders achieve better grades with fewer passes.

In an industry first, John Deere’s SmartGrade™ Motor Grader is fully factory integrated with mastless 3-D grade control. With no external masts, cables or GNSS receivers to install and remove, operators can focus on the grading job at hand instead of tedious daily maintenance requirements.

The daily chore of mounting and calibrating equipment has been eliminated, resulting in less downtime, improved performance and eliminating potential damage, theft or injury to personnel.

  • SmartGradeâ„¢ uses GPS and machine learning to create a more accurate and consistent surface, reducing the need for rework and improving overall project accuracy.
  • Improved efficiency: By automating the grading process, SmartGradeâ„¢ can help to speed up earthmoving operations and reduce the amount of time and labor required to complete a project.
  • Cost savings: The increased precision and efficiency of SmartGradeâ„¢ can help to save money on labor and material costs, ultimately resulting in a lower overall project cost for the customer.
  • Easy to use: SmartGradeâ„¢ is designed to be easy to use, with an intuitive interface and minimal training required for operators.
  • Versatility: SmartGradeâ„¢ can be used in a wide range of earthmoving applications, including grading, leveling, and excavation.

Case study: Flat pad grading with obstacles

A flat pad course was setup as shown, to test both the experienced operator and novice operator’s ability to grade around obstacles. The course was 45.7 m (150 ft) long and each run consisted of the operator making five grading passes across the width of the course. There were two obstacles in which the operator had to maneuver around as shown.

Each operator conducted at least three runs in each of the configurations listed below.

  • SmartGradeâ„¢ without Automation (with Automation for novice operator)
Note: for this operation, each operator was able to choose if they wanted to use Automation since they both used Automation in the previous operation. The experienced operator decided to not use automation because they were more familiar using the controls manually.
  • Manual Control with String Line Reference (No technology)

Highlights

Novice and experienced operators saw similar accuracy while using SmartGrade™.

  • Novice operator saw 49% improvement in grade accuracy while using SmartGrade™, while completing the job 26% faster.

  • Experienced operator saw a 27% grade accuracy improvement and ran 16% faster while utilizing SmartGrade™ as opposed to manual control with string line.
